Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince... in Russian!

Yesterday, a number of the American students studying in Tomsk went to see the new Harry Potter movie.  My friend Steve and I decided to treat the occasion with the formality it deserved.

  1. Hahaha! This is funny!

    Finally, some pictures!

How was the movie, Rowan? We really want to see it here. What did you think of the Russian translation?

  3. Я не был совсем доволен фильмом. Гарру Поттер стал мыльной оперой! Кто знал!

  4. Thanks for the image, Rowan. It is reassuring to know that you do not look like a middle aged, overweight, German tourist. In 1963 we viewed a John Wayne movie at a theater in Samsun, Turkey. We sat in the balcony. Everyone in the theater was smoking so we saw the movie through a thick blue haze. The dialogue was dubbed in Turkish and the first words spoken by John Wayne, were: "Merhaba, efendim." We lit up our Bafra cigarettes in self defense. Your post card arrived on 7/18. Some of us were hoping that Moscow would keep Obama. The tomatoes in my little garden at the parish center are blooming and forming fruit. The weather has been unusually cool so the fruit is slow to develop. The three varieties of peppers, two fiery hot and one sweet Hungarian, are doing extremely well and will likely result in a bumper crop. Our trip to Austria, Poland, and Slovakia is fast approaching. My International Drivers Permit allows me to drive a car but I cannot drive a motorcycle with a sidecar. We depart 1 August and return 16 August.

  5. Dear Skip!

Thank you for the delightful story. Just what the doctor ordered. I'm trying to picture John Wayne speaking Turkish :)

I wish you a safe and enjoyable trip to Europe. It should be a lot of fun! Is your itinerary set?

  6. Our itinerary is ambitious but not overly intense. Depart for Vienna on the 1st, arriving the next day. We will pick up our fleet of cars in Vienna. On the 3rd we drive to the Tatras and remain for one day. On the 5th we continue to Poland and visit Auschwitz. Overnight in Krakow with a tour of the city and salt mines. On the 7th we drive to Bardejov where we will remain through the 14th with day trips to Svidnik, Tichy Potok, Levoca, Spis Castle, Kosice, and Presov (Russyn Museum). Drive to Vienna on the 15th and return home.

  7. I watched it yesterday with my brother. I especially liked the part, right after Dumbledore's dramatic death, when they're discussing if it's ok for Harry to date Ginny. Prioritize!
